Providence vs St. John’s: A Madison Square Garden showdown

A Big East Conference matchup between St. John’s and Providence will go down tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Providence looks to end the losing streak

The Providence Friars are sixth in the Big East Conference with an 11-4 record. They have lost both road games and are currently on a two-game losing streak. Providence is coming off a 69-60 loss to Creighton in a game in which junior guard Devin Carter had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Providence is ranked 65th in the nation, averaging 35.8 rebounds per game. They are also in the top 100 with 5.4 blocks per game. The Friars are not a good shooting team as they are 45.5% from the field and only 32.7% from deep. Carter is the best player on the team, averaging 16.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

St. John’s has a promising season

The St. John’s Red Storm are third in the Big East with an 11-4 record. They are going into this one after winning the last three games, including an impressive 81-71 win on the road against Villanova. Senior Center Joel Soriano had 20 points and 8 rebounds in that game. St. John’s is ranked 10th in the nation with 65.9 field goal attempts per game, but they are only 179th with 44.3% shooting from the field. The Red Storm are an excellent rebounding team, being ranked fourth in the nation with 14 offensive rebounds and 19th with 38.1 total rebounds per game. Soriano leads the team with 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

Betting Trends

St. John’s is 9-6-0 ATS this season, including 5-2-0 ATS at home and 7-3-0 ATS after a win. Providence is 8-6-1 ATS for the season and 1-1-0 ATS on the road.

Player to watch

St. John’s senior guard, Daniss Jenkins, was one of the key players in the team’s last three wins. Jenkins is averaging 12.8 points and 5.9 assists per game and is coming off an 18-point and five-assist performance in the win against Villanova while shooting 40% from three-point territory.

Injury Reports

Forward Bryce Hopkins and guard Justyn Fernandez are out for Providence while guard Chris Ledlum is questionable for St. John’s.

Prediction and Conclusion

This game will be a real spectacle, taking place at the world’s most famous arena. St. John’s definitely has the momentum, as they are winners of the last three games, while Providence has lost the last two of theirs. St. John’s center Joel Soriano averages a double-double for the entire year, and he is shooting over 65% from the field. Providence simply has no player that can even try to defend him, and given that the Red Storm will most likely cover the -5.5 point spread.
