Matteo Berrettini vs Lorenzo Sonego: ATP Marrakech – quarterfinal

Two Italian players will go against each other in the quarterfinal at the ATP Marrakech.

Matteo Berrettini Profile

Matteo Berrettini is currently 135th in the ATP rankings, and not that long ago, he was sixth in the world. The Italians are 6-2 for the season and 2-0 on clay courts.

Berrettini is coming off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Jaume Munar in the round of 16 after he defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.

This is only the third tournament for Berrettini this season. He lost the opener in Miami to Andy Murray and lost to Nuno Borges in the final of the Phoenix Challenger.

This is his first appearance in Marrakech after losing in the first round in 2018.

Lorenzo Sonego Profile

Lorenzo Sonego is 61st in the rankings, and his career high was No. 21 in the world. The 28-year-old is 5-9 for the season and 1-0 on clay courts.

Sonego is coming off a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Sumit Nagal in the round of 16 in Marrakech.

Last week, he lost in the opening round in Miami to Daniel Evans. In Indian Wells, Sonego defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round and then lost to Cameron Norrie.

This is his first appearance in Marrakech after making it to the quarterfinals in 2019.

Head-to-Head Berrettini leads 4-1

  • Berrettini vs Sonego 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 (2023 Wimbledon, first round)
  • Sonego vs Berrettini 6-1, 6-2 (2023 ATP Stuttgart, first round)
  • Berrettini vs Sonego 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 (2022 ATP Stuttgart, quarterfinal)
  • Berrettini vs Sonego 6-4, 6-4 (2019 Phoenix Challenger, quarterfinal)
  • Berrettini vs Sonego 6-4, 7-6 (2016 Brescia Challenger, first round)

Prediction and Conclusion

Matteo Berrettini is trying to get back to full shape after struggling with injuries for more than a year. Once the rising star on the tour, the Italian has fallen out of the top 100 and is hoping to get back there in the next couple of weeks. He had a solid start in Marrakech and will try to make it to the semifinals against his fellow Italian, Sonego. Berrettini has won four of the previous five matches against Sonego, and his experience and great first serve should be enough to beat Sonego.
