Two great servers will face each other in the quarterfinal of the ATP Dallas tournament.
Jordan Thompson Profile
Jordan Thompson is 44th in the ATP rankings, one spot lower than his career high. The Asutralian is 6-3 for the season and 4-3 on hard surfaces. He is coming off a 6-1, 6-1 win over Dennis Kudla in the round of 16 after previously defeating Adam Neff 6-3, 6-1 in the first round.
At the Australian Open, Thompson lost in the second round to Stefanos Tsitsipas after defeating Aleksandar Vukic in the opening match.
At the beginning of the season, Thompson made it to the semifinals in Brisbane and the round of 16 in Adelaide.
This is the second time for Thompson to reach the quarterfinals in Dallas, after he did the same in 2022. He has never won a title on the ATP tour but has 18 in lower-level tournaments. Last year, he won two on the Challenger Tour, in Gwangju and Rome.
Ben Shelton Profile
Ben Shelton is 16th in the ranking, one spot lower than his career high. The American is 5-3 for the season and 4-3 on hard surface.
In the round of 16 in Dallas, Shelton won 6-3, 6-3 against Michael Mmoh.
At the Australian Open, the 21-year-old lost in the third round to Adrian Mannarino in a five-setter. Previously, he went past Christopher O’Connell and Roberto Bautista Agut.
Earlier in the season, Shelton lost in the opening round in Brisbane and the semifinal in Auckland.
Last season, Shelton won his first ATP title in Tokyo.
Head-to-Head – Shelton leads 2-0
- Shelton vs Thompson 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 (2023 ATP Tokyo, round of 16)
- Shelton vs Thompson 7-6, 6-4 (2022 Chicago Challenger, quarterfinal)
Prediction and Conclusion
Neither Thompson nor Shelton can be particularly happy with the way they started the season, so the tournament in Dallas is a real chance for them to go deep. Shelton won the previous two matches against the Australians, but both of those were tight and went to at least one tiebreak. Shelton is the one who has a better serve, while Thompson moves better on the court. Both players will have their moments in this match, and it will be a tough battle going over 22.5 games in total.
