Jannik Sinner vs Andrey Rublev: Australian Open – Quarterfinals

Andrey Rublev will take on Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open on Monday.

Jannik Sinner Profile

Jannik Sinner is enjoying the highest ranking of his career, being No. 4 in the world. The Italian has been dominating the first week in Melbourne, winning all four matches in straight sets. He is coming off a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 win over Karen Khachanov, and previously, he defeated Sebastian Baez, Jesper De Jong and Botic Van Den Zandschulp.

This will be Sinner’s second quarterfinal in Melbourne after he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2022. Last season, the Italian finished with a 64-15 record and four titles but most importantly he led the Italian team to the Davis Cup title.

Andrey Rublev Profile

Andrey Rublev is fifth in the ATP rankings, the highest he has ever been. The Russian is coming off an epic win against Alex De Minaur in the round of 16 – 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. That was his second five-setter this year in Melbourne after he was pushed to the limit in the opening round against Tiago Seyboth Wild. Rublev defeated Christopher Eubanks and Sebastian Korda in straight sets.

This will be Rublev’s third quarterfinal at the Australian Open and last year he lost at this stage to Novak Djokovic. Rublev finished the 2023 season with a 59-27 record winning two titles, and he already won one in 2024, in the first week in Hong Kong.

  • Sinner vs Rublev 6-2, 6-4 (2023 Miami, round of 16)
  • Rublev vs Sinner 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 ret. (2022 French Open, round of 16)
  • Sinner vs Rublev 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 (2022 Monte Carlo, round of 16)
  • Sinner vs Rublev 6-2, 7-6 (2021 Barcelona, quarterfinal)
  • Rublev vs Sinner 2-1 ret. (2020 Vienna, round of 16)

Prediction and Conclusion

This will be an interesting match between two players who are entering their prime. Sinner is seen as the future No. 1 and Rublev is hoping to make it to his first Grand Slam semifinal. Sinner has won four of six matches so far against Rublev, but both of the Russian wins came after Sinner retired. There is no doubt that Sinner is the better player and had a much easier road to the quarterfinals. Rublev will leave his heart out on the court but that will not win him more than a set. Taking all that into consideration, going for Sinner to win 3-1 is the right choice.
