Two of the best teams in the league will collide in the AFC Wild Card Playoffs as the Kansas City Chiefs host the Miami Dolphins at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Miami Dolphins finished the regular season second in the AFC East with an 11-6 record, the same as the leading Buffalo Bills, who defeated them 21-14 in the last week of the regular season. That loss came after a blowout 56-19 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens. The Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa led the league with 4,624 yards and had 29 TDs for the season. Miami led the league with 401.3 yards per game and was ranked second in the NFL with 29.2 points per game.
The Kansas City Chiefs finished on top of the AFC West with an 11-6 record. They finished the season by winning 3 of the last 4 games including a 13-12 victory against the Los Angeles Rams in the closing week of the season. QB Patrick Mahomes had another impressive season, being ranked sixth in the league with 4,183 yards and eighth with 27 TDs. Kansas City is 9th in the league with 351.3 yards per game and 15th with 21.8 points per game.
Miami is 10-7-0 ATS for the season, including 4-3-0 on the road. Kansas City is 9-7-1 ATS for the season and 4-4-0 at home.
The Chiefs defeated the Dolphins 21-14 in a Week 9 game played in Germany. Mahomes threw two touchdown passes in the first half to Rashee Rice and Jerick McKinnon. Miami had a chance to come back in the game but Tua Tagovailoa couldn’t handle a snap on fourth-and-10 with just over a minute left in the game.
CB Xavien Howard is out for the Dolphins while OL Wanya Morris is out for the Chiefs.
Both teams finished with 11 wins in the season, and whoever moves one from this one can go all the way to win the Super Bowl. The defending champions, Kansas City, are a 4.5-point favorite going into this one. Patrick Mahomes is a proven winner under pressure and the key man for the Chiefs. Kansas City is ranked second in the league, allowing only 17.3 points per game, and is fourth, allowing 176.5 passing yards per game. However, they are tied for 28th place in rush defense, and that is where Miami can make them pay. RB Raheem Mosters leads the league with 18 TDs and has run for 1,012 yards with 4.8 ypc. Tyreek Hill has fully recovered from injury, and as long as Tua Tagovailoa passes like he usually does, the Dolphins will cover the given spread.
