Daniel Elahi Galan vs Sebastian Baez: Australian Open – Second round
Two South American players will collide in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Daniel Elahi Galan Profile
Daniel Elahi Galan is 87th in the ATP rankings, and he has never been higher than No. 56 in the world. The 27-year-old is coming off a five-setter in the opening round against Jason Kubler, winning by 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. This is the first time ever for the Columbian to win a match in Melbourne in his fourth appearance, including the qualifying rounds.
Last week, Galan was in Brisbane but failed to qualify for the main draw. He finished the 2023 season with a 32-34 record, including 3-11 on hard surface.
Sebastian Baez Profile
Sebastian Baez is ranked 29th in the world, three spots lower than his career high. The Argentinian moved on to the second round in Melbourne after JJ Wolf retired in the opening match. This is the second time in his career that he has moved past the opener at the Australian Open. That was technically Baez’s first win of the season after he lost to Lukas Klein in Brisbane and John Draper in Adelaide.
Baez won three titles last season in Cordoba, Kitzbuhel, and Winston Salem. He finished the season with a 36-28 record and 9-7 on hard surface.
Head-to-Head
- Baez vs Galan 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 (2023 – Second round in Winston Salem)
- Baez vs Galan 7-5, 6-2 (2021 – Round of 16 at Concepcion challenger)
- Galan vs Baez 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2020 – Round of 16 at Campinas challenger)
Prediction and Conclusion
Both players prefer playing on clay courts and beat the odds to find themselves in the second round in Melbourne. One of them will reach the third round at the Australian Open for the first time but will have to go through a tough match. Baez is the better overall player, but none of these players is capable of playing consistently well on this surface. Both of them will have many ups and downs, and it is expected to exchange sets that will take the match to over 38.5 games.
