Cori Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka: Australian Open – Semifinal

In a rematch of last year’s US Open Final, Coco Gauff will take on Aryna Sabalenka in the Australian Open semifinal on Wednesday.

Cori Gauff Profile

Cori Gauff won her first Grand Slam title in September at the US Open. The 19-year-old moved to fourth place in the WTA rankings, which is her career high. This is the first time in her career that she has reached the Australian Open semis.

Gauff is coming off a 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 win over Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals. Previously, she defeated Magdalena Frech, Alycia Parks, Caroline Dolehide, and Karolina Schmiedlova all in straight sets.

Gauff has a perfect 10-0 record this season after winning the title in Auckland in the first week of the season.

Aryna Sabalenka Profile

Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion of the Australian Open after winning her first Grand Slam title last year. The world No. 2 has had an excellent tournament in Melbourne, winning all five matches in straight sets without losing more than three games in a single set. The player from Belarus is coming off a 6-2, 6-3 win over Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals after previously beating Amanda Anisimova, Lesya Tsurenko, Barbora Fruhvirtova, and Ella Seidel.

Sabalenka is 9-1 for the season. In the first week of 2024, she reached the final in Brisbane, where she lost to Elena Rybakina.

Prediction and Conclusion

This is the best match the WTA tour can bring at the moment, and it is a shame it doesn’t come in the final. Gauff and Sabalenka played an unforgettable final at the US Open last year, and the more experienced Sabalenka is looking for revenge. She is playing her best tennis, dominating all of the previous five matches. Gauff is also in excellent form, and this match can easily go either way. However, given their current form and the stakes that come with this match, we can expect a long and tough battle that will last over 22.5 games in total.
