Andy Murray vs David Goffin: Indian Wells Masters – First round

Two players who are far from their prime will face each other in the opening round of the Indian Wells Masters.

Andy Murray Profile

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray is currently ranked 61st in the ATP rankings. The three-time Grand Slam champion is 3-7 for the season and 2-5 on hard surface.

He is coming off a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Ugo Humbert in the second round in Dubai after beating Denis Shapovalov in the opening round after being set down.

Previously, Murray lost in the opening rounds at Marseille, Montpellier, and the Australian Open.

This will be his 16th appearance in Indian Wells, and his best result was in 2009, when he reached the final but lost to Rafael Nadal. Last year, he made it to the third round, losing to John Draper.

David Goffin Profile

The former World No. 7 David Goffin is currently 112th in the ATP rankings. He is 13-6 for the season and 7-2 on hard surfaces.

The Belgian had to go through the qualifiers to make it to the Indian Wells main draw, and he did so after beating Maxime Cressy and Luca Nardi.

His best result of the season was reaching the round of 16 in Rotterdam, where he lost to Alex de Minaur.

This will be Goffin’s seventh appearance in Indian Wells. His best result was the semifinal in 2016, where he lost to Milos Raonic.

Prediction and Conclusion

This will be an interesting match between two players who are far past their prime. Murray has announced that he will probably retire after the summer, and he will go as deep as possible in one of the Masters he never won. Goffin is a bit younger than Murray, but he is also struggling to get back to where he once was. The Belgian barely made it through the qualifiers and will face a player he has beaten only once in eight matches. Neither of them is in top shape, but we will go with Murray since he has never lost a set to Goffin in an official match.
